Sleep under the stars in the Sahara. Book Merzouga luxury desert camps, traditional Berber tents, or a 2-night wild camping adventure in Erg Chebbi.

Overview:

The true magic of the Sahara Desert reveals itself after the sun goes down. When the daytime heat fades, the Erg Chebbi dunes transform into a peaceful, silent oasis illuminated by millions of bright stars. Our Merzouga Stays & Nightlife experiences offer you the chance to spend an unforgettable night—or multiple nights—deep within the golden sands of the Moroccan desert.

Desert “nightlife” in Merzouga is an enchanting, soulful experience. It is defined by gathering around a crackling campfire, listening to the rhythmic beats of traditional Berber drumming, sharing stories under the Milky Way, and waking up to a breathtaking desert sunrise. From high-end glamping with modern amenities to rugged, isolated survival treks, we have the perfect desert stay to match your travel style and comfort level.

Wild Camping Merzouga

Overnight Wild Camping

For the true adventurer and minimalist traveler. This immersive overnight expedition takes you far beyond the permanent tourist camps and deep into the isolated wilderness of the Erg Chebbi dunes. You will trek with a local guide and pack camels to set up a mobile, lightweight camp in completely untouched locations. There are no modern facilities or electricity here—just you, your guide, a campfire, and the profound, healing silence of the deep Sahara. It is the ultimate experience for stargazing and disconnect.

What to Expect from a Night in the Merzouga Desert

To ensure you stay comfortable from sunset to sunrise, we recommend packing a small overnight backpack with these essentials:

  • Warm Layers: The desert climate experiences dramatic temperature drops at night. Even in the summer, evenings can feel brisk, and winter nights (December to February) can drop close to freezing. Bring a warm jacket, sweater, and long pants.
  • A Power Bank: While luxury camps have electrical outlets, traditional and wild camping options do not. Keep your phone and camera charged with a portable battery pack.
  • Flashlight or Headlamp: Crucial for walking around the camp at night or finding your way during wild camping.
  • Slip-On Shoes: Sandals or slip-on shoes are ideal for walking around the camp sand, but keep closed-toe shoes handy for the trek in and out.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

You have options! Most travelers prefer to arrive at the camps via a scenic, 1-hour camel trek at sunset. However, if you prefer not to ride a camel, have heavy luggage, or have mobility limitations, we can easily arrange transport directly to your camp in a comfortable 4×4 vehicle.

Luxury camps occasionally offer limited Wi-Fi in the common areas, but cellular data (4G/5G) from local Moroccan networks (Inwi, Maroc Telecom, Orange) generally works quite well on top of the dunes. However, we highly encourage turning off your devices to fully enjoy the peaceful atmosphere!

In our Luxury Camp, each tent features its own private, indoor western-style toilet and hot shower. In our Traditional Camp, there are shared, clean toilet and shower facilities located a short walk from the tents. For Wild Camping, there are no facilities; we practice strict “Leave No Trace” eco-camping in nature.
