What to Expect During the Experience
Arrival in Merzouga
Luggage drop-off and preparation.
Your adventure begins at our meeting point in Merzouga. You will safely leave your heavy luggage secured in our storage room and pack only a small overnight backpack with your essentials for the night.
Sunset Camel Trek
1 to 1.5 hours of riding.
Meet your cameleer and mount your dromedary. You will ride in a caravan deep into the Erg Chebbi dunes. The pace is slow and relaxing. Halfway to the camp, you will stop at a high dune to dismount, take photos, and watch the spectacular sunset.
Welcome to the Camp
Mint tea and settling in.
Arrive at the traditional camp as dusk settles. You will be welcomed with a hot glass of Moroccan mint tea and shown to your private woven tent where you can drop off your backpack and get comfortable.
An Authentic Desert Evening
Tagine, drums, and stars.
A hearty, traditional dinner (usually a rich vegetable and meat tagine with fresh bread) is served in the communal dining tent. Afterward, the camp comes alive as the guides light a campfire and play traditional Berber rhythms on their drums. Feel free to join in, dance, or simply lay back on the carpets and stargaze.
Sunrise & Return Journey
A peaceful morning ride.
Wake up early to catch the sunrise painting the dunes in incredible colors. After a simple, traditional breakfast at the camp, you will mount your camels once more and ride back to the village, arriving mid-morning to collect your luggage and freshen up.
Know Before You Book
What is a "Traditional" Camp?
Unlike luxury camps, which function like hotel rooms in the sand, a traditional camp focuses on an authentic, rustic experience.
- The Tents: You will sleep in a private tent made from thick, woven dark fabric (traditional nomad style). The beds are basic but comfortable, with mattresses and thick blankets provided.
- Facilities: Traditional camps feature a shared bathroom block located slightly away from the sleeping tents. These typically have western-style flush toilets and basic washing facilities, but they do not have private en-suite bathrooms or hot showers inside the tents. (You will have access to a shower when you return to our guest house in the village the next morning).
Luggage
Because you are traveling by camel, you cannot bring large suitcases to the camp. You will need a small backpack to carry your water, camera, and a change of clothes for the night. Your main luggage will be locked securely at our starting point in Merzouga.
What to Bring?
- A small backpack for your overnight items.
- Comfortable clothes: Long pants are highly recommended for the camel ride to prevent chafing.
- Warm layers: A warm sweater, jacket, and socks are essential from late autumn to early spring, as the traditional tents can be drafty and the desert gets very cold at night.
- A flashlight or headlamp: Electricity in the traditional camps is usually limited to solar-powered lights in the main areas; a flashlight is very helpful for navigating to the bathroom block at night.
- A power bank to keep your phone or camera charged.
- Wet wipes and basic toiletries.
