What to Expect During the Experience
Day 1: Into the Heart of the Sahara
Arrival in Merzouga
Meeting and preparation.
Your adventure begins in the mid-afternoon at our guest house in Merzouga. Here, you can safely park your car, pack a small overnight bag, and enjoy a welcoming glass of mint tea before meeting your camel guide.
Sunset Camel Trek
1 to 1.5 hours of riding.
Mount your camel and leave the village behind. You will trek deep into the Erg Chebbi dunes at a relaxing pace. Halfway to the camp, your guide will stop at a high dune so you can dismount and watch the sunset paint the sand in vibrant shades of orange and red.
Overnight Desert Camp
Music and stargazing.
Arrive at your desert camp as dusk falls. You will be served a delicious traditional Moroccan dinner. Afterward, gather around the campfire to listen to live Berber drumming under one of the clearest, most spectacular starry skies in the world before retiring to your private tent.
Day 2: The Ancient Caravan City of Rissani
Sunrise & Return to Merzouga
A peaceful morning start.
Wake up early to witness a magical Sahara sunrise over the dunes. After breakfast at the camp, you will ride your camel (or take a 4x4) back to our guest house in Merzouga, where you can take a refreshing shower.
Exploring the Rissani Souk
The bustling commercial heart.
Your driver will take you on the short journey to Rissani. You will dive into the vibrant, colorful Souk. Walk through the spice markets, see the traditional artisan crafts, and visit the famous "Donkey Park" where hundreds of donkeys rest while their owners shop.
Mausoleum of Moulay Ali Cherif
History and architecture.
Leave the bustling market to visit the serene Mausoleum of Moulay Ali Cherif. Admire the stunning Moroccan architecture, intricate tilework (zellij), and peaceful courtyards of this incredibly important historical site.
Lunch: Authentic Berber Pizza
The ultimate local dish.
Before heading back, we will stop at a local restaurant to enjoy Rissani's most famous culinary export: the Medfouna (Berber Pizza). This delicious stuffed flatbread is filled with meat, almonds, eggs, and local spices. After lunch, your driver will return you to Merzouga, concluding the 2-day tour.
Know Before You Book
Why Include Rissani?
Before Merzouga became a tourist hub, Rissani (formerly the ancient city of Sijilmassa) was the most important city in the region. It was a major crossroads for trans-Saharan caravans trading gold, salt, and spices. Visiting Rissani allows you to connect with the genuine, living history of southeastern Morocco. The market is not built for tourists; it is a vital economic hub for locals and nomads who travel from miles around.
Market Days
While Rissani can be visited any day of the week, the Souk only comes fully alive on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Sundays. If your travel schedule allows, we highly recommend planning your Day 2 to fall on one of these three market days for the most authentic, bustling experience.
What to Bring?
- Comfortable clothing: Pack layers for the desert (it gets cold at night!) and ensure you wear modest clothing for Rissani (covering shoulders and knees) out of respect for local customs and when entering the Mausoleum area.
- Small change (Dirhams): Essential for buying spices, dates, or souvenirs in the Rissani Souk.
- A camera: Rissani is incredibly photogenic, but please ask permission before taking photos of the local merchants or shoppers.
- A small overnight bag for the desert camp.
