What to Expect During the Experience
Morning: Khamlia & Gnawa Music
The rhythms of the Sahara.
Your guide will pick you up after breakfast. We begin the day by driving to Khamlia village to visit the Gnawa musicians. Relax with a glass of mint tea while listening to their spiritual, trance-inducing music, deeply rooted in African traditions.
Mid-Morning: M'Fis Mines & Fossil Beds
The Black Desert.
Leaving the village, we head off-road into the starkly contrasting Black Desert. We will explore the ruins of the M'Fis lead and baryte mines. Nearby, your guide will show you areas of the hammada (stony desert) where you can find fossilized marine life dating back millions of years when the Sahara was an ocean.
Late Morning: Visiting the Nomads
Authentic desert hospitality.
We drive deep into the arid landscape to find a nomadic Berber family. You will be welcomed into their traditional tent, woven from camel and goat hair. Share tea, see how they manage their herds, and learn about their incredibly resilient, ancient way of life.
Lunch: Traditional Medfouna
The legendary Berber Pizza.
For lunch, we will stop at a local village or a shaded desert spot to enjoy a freshly baked Medfouna—famously known as "Berber Pizza." This delicious, hearty dish consists of a flatbread stuffed with minced meat, onions, herbs, and local spices, traditionally baked in a sand oven.
Afternoon: Dayet Srji & Hassilabiad
Oases and seasonal lakes.
In the afternoon, we will visit the seasonal salt lake of Dayet Srji (if flooded, it is a haven for Greater Flamingos and other birds). We will also take a peaceful walk through the Hassilabiad Oasis to see how ancient underground irrigation channels (khettaras) keep the desert gardens green.
Late Afternoon: Return to Merzouga
One last panoramic view.
We will end the 4x4 circuit by driving to a high vantage point for sweeping views of the golden Erg Chebbi dunes in the late afternoon light. Your driver will then return you to your hotel or Riad, concluding your full day of discovery.
