Day 1: The Stony Desert & The Night Safari
Afternoon Herpetology
Searching the hammada.
Your guide will meet you in Merzouga after lunch. We head straight into the rocky hammada plains in our 4x4 to search for diurnal reptiles like the Desert Monitor and Uromastyx lizards basking in the afternoon sun.
Sunset Fox Tracking
The golden hour.
As the temperature drops, we move toward the dunes. Using binoculars and tracking skills, we will scan the dune edges for Fennec foxes emerging from their dens to hunt.
Nocturnal UV Safari
Revealing the hidden desert.
After a traditional dinner at your accommodation, we head out on foot and by 4x4 into the dark. Equipped with UV flashlights, we will hunt for glowing Yellow Scorpions, track leaping jerboas, and look for the fresh trails of nocturnal snakes.
Day 2: Birding the Lakes & Deep Desert Tracking
Sunrise Birdwatching
Catching the morning chorus.
We depart before dawn to catch the desert birds at their most active. We will focus on finding the elusive Desert Sparrow in the sandy scrub and the Hoopoe-Lark displaying over the dunes.
Dayet Srji Lake
Water in the desert.
Depending on seasonal water levels, we will visit Dayet Srji. This striking salt lake attracts Greater Flamingos, storks, and various wading birds, providing incredible photographic opportunities against the backdrop of the sand dunes.
Afternoon Reptile Tracking
Finding the sand swimmers.
After a picnic lunch under an acacia tree, we shift our focus back to reptiles. Your guide will teach you how to track the Sandfish Skink—a lizard that "swims" beneath the loose sand—before heading to rocky cliffs to search for roosting Pharaoh Eagle-Owls.
Day 3: Oasis Life & The Journey Home
Morning in the Oasis
Exploring the palm groves.
After breakfast, we explore a traditional desert oasis. The dense palm groves and irrigation channels support a completely different micro-ecosystem, perfect for spotting warblers, bee-eaters, and migratory songbirds.
Reading the Sand
The ancient art of tracking.
Spend your final hours learning the finer details of identifying animal tracks. Your guide will show you how to distinguish between the footprints of different beetles, lizards, and mammals, and how to tell exactly when they passed by.
End of the Expedition
Returning to civilization.
By midday, we will return to your hotel or Riad in Merzouga, concluding your comprehensive 3-day exploration of the Sahara's incredible wildlife.

Why Choose a 3-Day Expedition?
Ethical Wildlife Observation
This is a strict “no touch, no bait” ecological tour. We observe the animals in their natural habitats without causing them stress. We keep a respectful distance, particularly around nesting birds and denning mammals, and use appropriate lighting during our night safaris to minimize disturbance.
