Why Choose Sunset Camel Trekking in Merzouga?
Merzouga is one of the best places in Morocco to experience the Sahara Desert. The village is located beside the Erg Chebbi dunes, which are known for their tall golden sand dunes and wide desert views. You do not need to travel far to feel surrounded by the Sahara. In only a short time, you can leave the village area and enter a quiet dune landscape.
Sunset is one of the best times of the day for camel trekking. The temperature is usually more comfortable than midday, especially in warm months. The light is also much better for photography, and the dunes look softer and more colorful.
A sunset camel trek in Merzouga is also a good choice if you are not planning to sleep in a desert camp. You can still enjoy the camel ride, the dunes, and the sunset, then return to your hotel or Riad!
What to Expect During the Experience
Your sunset camel trekking experience starts with a meeting at the agreed location. This can be in Merzouga village, Hassilabiad, near your hotel, or at a nearby meeting point depending on where you are staying and where we dealed this can also be at a meeting point that we arranged via email such as a public area like a cafe. The exact starting time changes during the year because sunset time is different in each season so that’s why we always let these small details until the date get a little bit closer!
Before the ride begins, your camel guide will help you get on the camel and explain how to sit comfortably. Camels are calm animals and used to meet people everyday, and the ride is slow, so you do not need any previous experience.
Once everyone is ready, you will begin the ride into the dunes. The guide walks with the camels and leads the way through the sand. During the ride, you can enjoy the quiet desert views, take photos, and feel the relaxing rhythm of the camel walk and also you can enjoy sandboarding if you let us know about it during the confirmation.
After some time, you will stop at a nice dune viewpoint. From there, you can walk a little on the sand, sit down, and watch the sunset. This is usually the best moment for photos because the light is soft and warm.
After sunset, you will ride back to the starting point. The return ride is calm, and the desert atmosphere becomes even quieter as the day ends.
Best Time for Sunset Camel Trekking
Sunset camel trekking is available all year, but the starting time depends on the season. In winter, the sunset is earlier, so the activity usually starts in the late afternoon. In summer, the sunset is later, and the tour can start a bit later too.
The best months for comfortable weather are usually from September to late april and early May. During summer, Merzouga can be very hot during the day, but sunset is still one of the better times to enjoy the dunes because the temperature becomes softer.
It is always better to confirm the exact meeting time before your activity so you do not miss the best sunset light.
Is This Camel Ride Difficult?
This activity is easy and suitable for beginners. You do not need to know how to ride a camel before. The guide will help you get on and off the camel, and the ride goes at a slow pace.
However, sitting on a camel can feel different if it is your first time. Some people may feel it in their legs or back, especially if they are not used to riding animals, that’s why we always recommend wearing long pants! For most travelers, a short sunset camel trek is comfortable and enjoyable.
If you have back problems, knee problems, or any health concerns, it is better to mention this before booking.
What to Bring?
For a comfortable sunset camel trekking experience, it is good to bring a few simple things:
Comfortable clothes: Closed shoes or sandals that are easy to walk with in the sand
Sunglasses
A scarf or hat for wind and sand
Water
Camera or phone
Light jacket in winter, especially after sunset
The desert can become cooler quickly after the sun goes down, especially from November to March, so a light jacket is useful in the colder months.
