What to Expect During the Activity
Arrival and Gear Fitting
Arrive at our specialized moto garage in Merzouga. Because dirt biking is an extreme sport, you will be fitted with full protective gear, including a motocross helmet, goggles, gloves, boots, and body armor.
Briefing and Warm-Up
Your expert guide will explain the mechanics of the KTM bike and the specific techniques required for riding in deep sand (keep your weight back and keep the throttle open!). You will start with a quick warm-up on the flat, hard-packed dirt just outside the dunes to get a feel for the clutch and throttle.
Carving the Erg Chebbi Dunes
Follow your guide into the deep golden sand. You will quickly learn how to "float" over the dunes, using the bike's massive power to climb steep faces and surf down the other side. The route is tailored to your specific riding ability, ensuring a challenging but safe ride.
Panoramic Photo Stop
Halfway through your intense 1-hour session, you will stop at a towering dune peak. Take off your helmet, cool down, and snap some incredible, action-packed photos with your KTM overlooking the vast Sahara Desert.
Return to Base
Kickstart the bike for a final exhilarating sprint across the desert back to the garage. Return your gear, grab a cold drink of water, and celebrate an incredible off-road achievement.

While quads and buggies offer four-wheel stability, a dirt bike offers total freedom and agility. KTMs are the gold standard for desert rallies like the Dakar. Riding a dirt bike in the sand is physically demanding and requires active body movement, balance, and throttle control. It is an incredibly rewarding experience that makes you feel like a true rally racer navigating the Sahara.
Do I Need Experience?
Yes. Unlike our automatic quads and buggies, our KTM dirt bikes have manual clutches and gears. You must know how to ride a motorcycle to book this tour. While prior off-road or sand-riding experience is a bonus, it is not strictly necessary—our guides will teach you the specific techniques for riding in the dunes as long as you have a solid foundation in motorcycle control.
Best Time for Dirt Biking
We highly recommend booking this activity in the early morning. The cooler overnight temperatures make the sand firmer and more packed, which provides much better traction for the bikes. Late afternoon is also a great option for beautiful sunset lighting, though the sand will be softer and deeper after baking in the sun all day.
What to Bring?
- Comfortable, breathable clothing to wear underneath your protective armor.
- Long thick socks to wear comfortably inside the motocross boots.
- A backpack or secure pocket is not recommended while riding to maintain your balance; leave your valuables and heavy cameras locked safely at our base. Your guide can carry a phone to take photos of you.
- High energy! Riding in the sand is a fantastic physical workout.
