What to Expect During the Activity
Early Morning Departure
Your guide will pick you up at your hotel in a 4x4 vehicle just after sunrise. The early morning hours are crucial, as desert birds are most active and vocal before the midday heat sets in. You will start by scanning the edges of the Erg Chebbi dunes for the Desert Sparrow.
Exploring the Hammada and Wadis
Leave the soft sand behind and drive into the hammada (stony desert) and dry wadis. Here, your guide will use their expert tracking skills to locate perfectly camouflaged species like the Egyptian Nightjar roosting in the shade, and search the open plains for Cream-colored Coursers and Hoopoe-Larks.
Visit Dayet Srji Seasonal Lake
Depending on the season and recent rainfall, you will visit Dayet Srji. When flooded, this lake attracts hundreds of Greater Flamingos, ducks, storks, and various wading birds, creating an incredible contrast against the backdrop of the dry sand dunes.
Desert Lunch & Rest
During the hottest part of the day when bird activity drops, you will take a break. Enjoy a freshly prepared traditional lunch, either set up as a picnic under an acacia tree or hosted by a local nomadic family in their tent. This is a great time to rest, review your photos, and learn about nomadic life.
Late Afternoon Tracking & Return
As the temperature begins to cool, you will head toward rocky outcrops and cliffs to search for the Pharaoh Eagle-Owl before it begins its nightly hunt. After a final scan of the area during the beautiful late afternoon light, your driver will return you to your hotel.

Best Time for Birding in Merzouga
While you can find resident desert birds year-round, the absolute best times for birdwatching in Merzouga are during the spring migration (March to May) and autumn migration (September to November). During these windows, the resident desert species are joined by hundreds of migratory species crossing the Sahara between Europe and Africa.
What to Bring?
- Binoculars (Essential! If you do not have your own, please let us know in advance so we can arrange a pair for you).
- Camera with a telephoto lens (300mm or longer is highly recommended for bird photography).
- Neutral-colored clothing (greens, browns, tans) to blend into the environment and avoid startling the birds.
- Sun protection: A wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen. Comfortable walking shoes for short hikes over rocky terrain.
- A bird field guide for Morocco or North Africa (optional, but fun to have!).
