Target Species: Mammals & Reptiles

During this 2-day tracking expedition, your guide will read the sand like a book to help you locate some of the Sahara’s most incredible wildlife:

  • Fennec Fox (Vulpes zerda) – The world’s smallest fox with massive ears to dissipate heat.
  • Saharan Horned Viper (Cerastes cerastes) – A master of camouflage that buries itself in the sand with only its eyes and “horns” showing.
  • Sandfish Skink (Scincus scincus) – A smooth lizard that literally “swims” beneath the surface of the loose sand.
  • Desert Monitor Lizard (Varanus griseus) – A large, impressive reptile often found in the rocky hammada.
  • Lesser Egyptian Jerboa (Jaculus jaculus) – A nocturnal, kangaroo-like rodent that leaps incredible distances across the dunes.
  • Yellow Scorpion (Androctonus australis) – Found during our night walks; their exoskeletons glow a brilliant cyan-green under UV light.
  • Sand Cat (Felis margarita) – Extremely rare and elusive, but occasionally spotted on night drives!

Day 1: Sunset Tracking & The Nocturnal Safari

1

Afternoon Herpetological Tour

Searching the stony plains

Your guide will pick you up in a 4x4 in the mid-afternoon. We start by exploring the rocky hammada plains and dry wadis to look for diurnal (daytime) reptiles basking in the late afternoon sun, such as Uromastyx lizards and Desert Monitors.

2

Tracking the Fennec Fox

The golden hour search

As sunset approaches, we move into the Erg Chebbi dunes. Using a 4x4 or quad bikes, we will search for Fennec foxes emerging from their burrows to begin their nightly hunt. This is the absolute best time for photography as the light turns soft and golden.

3

Sunset Break & Rest

Dinner in the desert

Enjoy a warm, traditional Moroccan dinner at our desert camp or lodge. We will rest and prepare our gear (headlamps and UV flashlights) for the dark hours ahead.

4

The Night Safari

Revealing the hidden desert

After dark, the desert truly comes alive. We head back out on foot and by 4x4 for a 2 to 3-hour nocturnal safari. Using spotlights and UV lights, we will track jerboas bounding across the sand, elegant geckos hunting insects, and scorpions glowing brightly in the dark. We will also look for tracks left by Horned Vipers.

Day 2: Reading the Sand & Morning Reptiles

1

Sunrise Tracking Session

Catching the early movement.

Wake up before dawn to head out into the dunes once more. The cool morning air is the second best time to spot a Fennec fox returning to its den, or to find fresh tracks laid down overnight before the wind erases them.

2

Breakfast & Sand Reading

Freshly made in the dunes.

After a hearty breakfast, your guide will teach you how to "read the sand"—identifying which tracks belong to beetles, snakes, lizards, or mammals, and determining how fresh they are.

3

Daytime Reptile Search & Return

Finding the sand swimmers.

Before the sun reaches its peak, we will spend our final hours searching the soft dune slips for the Sandfish Skink and other reptiles that prefer the warmer daytime temperatures. By midday, your driver will return you to your hotel, concluding the wildlife adventure.

Know Before You Book

Why Choose a Wildlife Tour in Merzouga?

This is not a standard tourist excursion; it is a specialized ecological tour. It requires patience, silence, and respect for nature. We do not harass, feed, or handle the wildlife in a way that causes them stress. Your guides are trained to locate these animals safely so you can observe and photograph them in their natural, undisturbed habitat.

Safety First

While you will be looking for venomous snakes and scorpions, you are completely safe. Our expert guides know exactly how to spot them from a safe distance and will guide your movements during the night walks. You must follow the guide’s instructions at all times.

What to Bring?

  • Closed-toe shoes or hiking boots (Absolutely essential for night walking—no sandals!).
  • Long trousers for protection against brush and insects.
  • Warm clothing (The desert gets very cold at night, even in the summer).
  • A headlamp or flashlight (We will provide UV lights for spotting scorpions).
  • Camera with a flash or fast lens for nighttime photography, and a telephoto lens for the foxes.
  • Patience and a quiet voice!
